The heat distorts this long shot as Amtrak Capitol Corridor #535, running an hour late, approaches the spur that goes to the San Jose Sewage Treatment plant near Alviso. Long a source of contention in regards to it's negative impact on the olfactory senses for the residents of Alviso. The city of San Jose in a sense "bribed" the town to be incorporated into San Jose with promises of sidewalks and city services, etc. When the residents agreed, they promplty began constructing a sewage treatment plant. Well...that's a service of the city, right?
The former salt ponds in the foreground belonging to the Alviso Salt Company have been allowed to be reclaimed by nature as a watershed / wetlands area. Unfortunately there hasn't been too much water to shed lately. These areas have really dried up as of late. The salt deposits give this shot a "Death Valley" sort of look, hence the title of the photo.
All of this being said, it's still not a very good picture and is a prime candidate for "reconstruction" either in the Picnik editor or at

Amazing distortion due to heat waves. It
appears the locomotive is not touching the
ground. See my note above.
About the City politics, its a shame. Such
incorporations are seen again and over, and
there are some similar stories from the
Phoenix metro area to be told.
