Laine's Grocery Store |
Pictures of the historic former Laine's
Grocery Store in Alviso, Ca.
This building housed the Tilden General
Store from 1865 to 1912, the family
business of Susan Ortley Tilden and her
daughter Minerva. From 1912 until 1939
it housed a number of different
enterprises. There was a saloon, a dance
hall, and according to local legend, the
site of a secret Chinese lottery.
Also formerly Laines Grocery Store it
is situated next to the historic
Tilden-Laine house in Alviso. It was
Laine's Grocery from 1940 to 1960. Owned
and operated by Willis Laine, former
mayor of Alviso who lived in the
victorian next door. Miraculously, the
building has survived the ravages of
time and flooding.
The shop was abandoned after floods in
the early 1980s. Water marks were to the
top of the doorframe.
