Nelson Monument on Calton Hill, Edinburgh. Built between 1807 and 1816 to commemorate Lord Viscount Nelson's victory at Trafalgar, as well as to provide a home for veteran sailors. The 100ft high tower, with its set back top stage, is reputedly modelled on Nelson's telescope. A moving ball on the topmost mast provided a time signal to ships in the Firth of Forth.
