Wood Duck with Mallard Girlfriend

This guy showed up at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma, and he's apparently in love with the female mallard you see here. He certainly seems devoted to her.

Lucchesi Park is one of the more depressing places you'll find to bird, but was an excellent place for us to go since today's subject in Bird School was gulls. There are a lot of them here, despite the putrid water, so we got to go over lots of IDs, but we didn't see the possible Mongolian/Vega gull that's been causing a stir here recently. (It was probably the carcass on the little island, or maybe it was with the other gunk the guy was pulling out of the water with a rake.) There was a disturbing goose sitting on a nest among the landscaping, with her discarded eggs surrounding her. A cormorant was cruising the pool with a piece of yellow caution tape tangled around his body, and a mallard gang rape happening just a short ways away from this wood duck.

What an odd place.
