Oh no Merc - kisses on your paw and a speedy

the dogs will hurt themselves on the beer
bottles that the students love to crash
against the rocks. I'm always picking up
after them but still.....

Oh, Mercury, I'm so sorry. Luckily, you have
a SuperMom taking care of you -- she can rush
you to urgent care, and still find time to
post a gorgeous shot of you with your new
"sock".
Dear Merc, Sounds like the SPCR group
collectively had a rough weekend. You
wouldn't *believe* what the vet did to me on
Friday. Feel better! --Pete

Sometimes the meds they want to shove down

Thanks Everyone for your healing wishes :-)
Mercury is doing much better as of this
morning. Yesterday, he was very gorked from
the pain meds and sedation and anesthesia
that were required for the suturing. He
didn't pee for almost 24hrs despite me
carrying him outside just about every 2-3
hrs. I have no idea why besides that he's
recently been more neurotic about me watching
him and looming over him getting samples. Not
knowing any physical reason why he wasn't
peeing, I can only imagine that in his
drugged out mind he saw all this carrying
around as some sort of torture.
Anyway as of 6:30am he peed. Yahoo! And
after yet another meal (KT be sure to tell
Sirene that we eat 6 times daily now with all
these meds) we crashed and slept hard. A few
hours sleep, removal of the bandage, a bit of
three-legged hobbling just to move around a
bit, more meds and now Merc is back to sleep
peacefully again (just a bit gorked from his
tramadol). :-)
Strike that sleeping peacefully, delivery
at the front door and we're under attack!!!
Sheesh, he's slipping and sliding on the wood
floor, fortunately no bleeding and he's proud
of himself for scaring off that UPS truck.
"Get back in your bed and stay there
you doofus!"

hour from the cars. thank god for the

but at least she didn't get into any
ligaments!! this is definitely gonna take

re: peeing. OMG, we went thru the same thing
this weekend. Pete would not pee for 24+ hrs
after his surgery, so like a worry wart I
called the vet and asked about it (she had
said that "difficulty urinating" is
a warning sign for neutering procedures, and
i figured "not peeing" is similar
to "difficulty urinating"). luckily
the dam broke and he's doing great now.

Mercury is doing much better. I expect that

"no, you can't play with Tag",
" no, you can't run up the stairs",

can't do that... I'm awaiting my 85mm f1.4

Merc continues to do really well. He's all
done with his antibiotics... phew back to 4x
per day feeding instead of 6x. I'll take his
sutures out tomorrow or Friday. I'm letting
him do a little straight jogging and he can
jump into the truck, just not out of the
truck. He's going a bit stir crazy from lack
of exercise.
Tag is getting fat. ;-) Not really, but
he's probably heavier than he's ever been
before. He wants his brother back from
enforced rest.
Mercury would absolutely die if I ever put a
cone on him. He's too good for a cone.
Although I had a sock on his foot while he
was gorked on pain meds, as soon as he was
off the drugs the sock came off and I told
him one time only not to lick his foot. He
minded. Unlike his brother who had to wear a
t-shirt for a tiny hot-spot, Merc wouldn't
dream of being overtly naughty.

Thank you for the link and oh how horrible!!
I'm so glad he healed so well.
Can I ask you something? I have a
(irrational?) fear of Moto getting hurt when
we're out and about. When this happened, how
did you get him a) to the car b) somewhere
where you could get him to the vet (assuming
you didn't have your car with you)? I'm such
a freak, that I worry that Moto will get hurt
when we're out hiking and my wimpy ass won't
be able to carry his 81 lbs back to the car
(because HELLO? I'm sure I can't carry a
squirmy, hurt, 81 lb. malinois anywhere, much
less 2 miles).

I don't think it's irrational to have a fear
that means you plan ahead. In this case we
were less than 200 yds from the truck. He
walked himself back, he didn't want to leave
the rabbits! The parking lot was a bloodbath
because his heart rate was so high he was
gushing blood. I always travel with a first
aid kit, towels and a 5 gallon water
container. I soaked off the worst of the mud
and gunk then pressure wrapped him for the 10
mile drive home where I shaved him to look
for a foreign body. When it became apparent
that the bleeding wasn't going to stop, I
wrapped him up in gauze again and took him to
the ER.
When I'm out hiking I have some very basic
things I always take in my fanny pack:
A slip lead -- for quick capture and can be
used as a muzzle, to tie a splint or as a
tourniquet in a pinch.
A small roll of vet wrap
A few squares of gauze
Benedryl
Baggies
Everything else for treatment stays in the
car in my first aid kit.
I figure those few things, in addition to
spare clothing from me if it's a bigger wound
-- a bra is pretty flexible as bandaging and
a sock or two can absorb a lot of mess. I
travel with a cell phone too. Sometimes
signal in the hills is spotty, but a 411 call
later and I'll know the closest vet ER and
can call and tell them I'm on my way.
I figure the risks of hiking and playing
and whatever we do that the boyz find fun,
are far outweighed by the joy they have doing
it. Some common sense and a level head will
see you through most anything we might find
in our local hiking forays.

yup, i always carry a first aid kit too.
pain in the fanny-pack, but it's come in
handy a bunch of times ... especially once
when matea ended up needing 13 stitches to
her main pad on her front leg. that was a
major bleeder!
let me add one REALLY handy thing to your
kit there, karen, that paid off BIG time
during that hike and several times since: a
good dog boot (or two!). since it's almost
always foot injuries, a good dog boot to slip
over all that bandaging is super handy, plus
the velcro strap helps with pressure to stop
blood flow as well.
when matea was injured, at 65 lbs, i could
carry her only so far across the back of my
shoulders ... we were an hour from the car
... well, in fact we weren't but i was hiking
with boys and they kept getting us lost. ;)
but with the boot being waterproof and acting
as a bit of a tourniquet she was able to at
least put some pressure on the foot and use
to hobble on, and didn't get soaked as we
went through the marshy bits.
i always carry at least two boots with me
now ... that way even if it's just a small
injury to one of the dogs, we can wrap, boot
and keep hiking.
