stereographic dock

The patient photographer on the dock is a friend of mine, another philosophy grad student at UBC. He's taking a picture of a heron that came and waded around near us. (See the picture
here ) I like how you can see the glow of his screen.

glasses?

Sorry. No, you don't need those glasses.
The trick is to get your eyes to converge at
just the right angle. Just let your eyes
relax and wander, each on its respective
image. Don't focus on either image. The
left eye should look at the left image and
the right eye at the right.
It might help to think of looking through
the pictures, into the distance, or even of
trying to get your eyes to diverge (it may
even work to try crossing your eyes, though
technically this is a "parallel" stereogram
and not a "cross-eyed" one). It may take a
while, but your brain wants to get the right
and left images to agree. Once you get used
to looking at these sorts of pictures, you
can get the effect within a second or two.
You could also try using a piece of paper
to separate the two images so that your eyes
can't look at the wrong one. Or, like Luminuscule (see comments), you could take apart an old
Viewmaster and use that to look at these. Or
you could buy a viewer online here .

My Grandather did pictures like this all the
time, so I"m used to looking at them. But I
can't get this one to go right. The dandilion
one worked lovely though. <edit: I finally
got it, though my eyes are begging for relief
now./
I'm learning how to take slides using a
stereoscopic camera.

I know what you mean about the eyes. I just
hope nobody sues me for damages. (Look at
your own risk!)
Sometimes it helps to look at a smaller
version.

Sure. Go for it.
I take it this is a way to view stereo
images without having to cross or diverge
your eyes, etc? That's a great project. I'm
not sure if it works for me, but I'd be
willing to put links to your program in my
other stereo images once you get it worked
out.
