He Had Me in Stitches

I had a horrid X-Acto knife mishap at my first job out of college, so a guy I liked took me to the NYU emergency room. A doctor-in-training tried several times to sew me back together, to no avail. He kept putting in stitches and they kept breaking through the skin. Finally, after many a significant look from me, the real doctor overseeing the procedure intervened and gave me six stitches. I still get the creeping willies whenever I use an X-Acto knife.

The best part is when the doctor said they
might have to remove my entire thumb nail.
He said if they didn't, it might grow back
all lumpy. I think he was worried I would
care, since I'm a girl. I was like,
"There is no way you're ripping my nail off."
I still have a little nerve damage on that
thumb.

funny: i have only gotten stitches once, and
it was also on my left thumb. i was 15. and
i had to have it done by a plastic surgeon,
'cause there was glass in there and
apparently it was really close to the tendon
and there was a danger of my losing feeling
in part of my hand - they told me this from
behind a little arm-curtain they set up so i
couldn't see them rooting around in my hand.
"uh, ok, jim", the doctor says to
another guy, "we're gonna need a plastic
surgeon in here." or maybe he used some
other insider-doc name for the plastic
surgeon like "p.s.", i don't
entirely remember. i was too busy crying and
running through the list of names of everyone
i knew, "i want daaaaddy....i waaant
laaaaura....i waaant jaaason...", etc.
pretty pathetic. : )
you know those towers of products you see
at the end of aisles at the supermarket?
well, there was one of glass bottles of guava
juice, of all things. the tower was
precariously stacked and when i reached for
one, the tower collapsed on me, breaking the
bottle that i was holding so the glass
plunged into my hand. there was pink juice
and blood all over the floor, and i stood
there in shock and could not let go of the
broken bottle neck i was holding until my mom
said, firmly, "dana! drop it! "
all very dramatic, haha. i didn't drink
guava juice for years. and there's still a
little glass in my hand that they couldn't
get, with a little ball of scar tissue
cocooned around it (yum!). every now and
again i'll feel it if i use the thumb to push
open a screen door with one of those
thumb-press handles, or something, and it'll
give me a willies feeling.

Guava juice, eh? Oh my god that's super
gross. At least mine was a clean slice . Just saying slice gives me the shivers. And even though I'd
never had stitches before, as soon as I cut
myself the first thing I thought was
"stitches". I just knew.
They wanted to get a plastic surgeon for me
too, because of the whole
she's-a-girl-she-must-be-vain thumbnail
thing. But as I said, I wasn't going to have
any of that nail ripping torture done to me.
I'd already lost a nail when I was a kid. My
mom accidentially stepped on my hand while
she was wearing some wooden '70s sandals and
my nail fell off. It was so gross. It
looked like cold pizza when you remove the
cheese and scrape off the sauce.
Before I went to the hospital, I held my
thumb, wrapped in papertowels, over my head
for a while. I remember I was wearing a long
dress with spaghetti straps and this guy I
worked with, Tony, looked at me and said,
"Good thing you shaved your arm pits
this morning." Hahah, that job was so
funny.

agreed: slice + flesh = shiver-inducing
i totally just threw up at your pizza
description. and it made me think of papa
moozzi's scab pizza ! only MINUS the cheese.
((((blllleegggghhh!!!))))
heh, where was the job? i have had so many jobs. it boggles the mind.
p.s.: you have so many vivid injury
stories! that is rough, about the shoes!
your ma prolly felt SO bad.
p.p.s. you have mastered the brow. your
current brows are superior to the ones here.
although i know the thin ones were all the
rage then; i was a sucka too.

Yeah, that was a time when I went hog wild
with the tweezers. I wanted to be David
Bowie and wax them off, but, thankfully, I
didn't. It was during that whole mid-'90s
waif model thing. I had just learned to
pluck them senior year of college. I'd never
bothered to before, but Rob's girlfriend (who
had no eyebrows) taught me and I went a
little overboard for a while. The brows make
this picture look so dated.
My mom was so sorry for wearing those
hippie wooden shoes. I was really little
when it happened, we still lived in Brooklyn.
Yeech.
Yeah, scab pizza man made me think of the
metaphor. :^)

HEY! I have a matching scar from comping up
logos for the Frist Museum back when I worked
in advertising. I didn't have stitches,
though, they used that biologically safe
super glue stuff...it never hurt, and after a
few days it fell off leaving a pristine,
super-straight, x-acto precision scar. If it
wasn't so weird I'd send you a picture
sometime...it's even at the same ANGLE as
yours. Mine's a little higher up though.
Ditto on the eyebrows, too.

Wow, I love this photo! The colors are
great, and you look so cute with those bangs,
and what a fetching expression! And your
eyes are GIANT. You're like one of the
big-eye paintings! Oh, and the reason you
linked me to this photo, your eyebrows.
These are cute, but I too prefer your current
brow 'do.
Loved the stories too. What a gory set of
comments! Lol! I too had a much less severe
"exaccident" once. I was pressing
on a ruler to hold it in place as I sliced
along it's edge, and didn't realize my finger
was hanging over! I took off a little hunk
near the corner of my left index fingernail.

I too cut my thumb, but it was when I was 14.
It has been almost a year. I cut my right
thumb though. The way I cut my thumb was so
stupid. I cut it on the cat food can. Ever
since then I freak out every day when I have
to feed my cats. I just opened the lid and
sliced the front part of my upper thumb
almost off. If it sliced about two more
centimeters I would have sliced off about two
inches of my thumb. I was in so much shock
when I cut it, just watching the blood poor
all over the cat food and then watching the
cats start to eat it. It took me about two
minutes to actually realize what happened. As
soon as I realized it I ran back in the
house, ran up stairs, and told my brother. He
thought I was joking because I use to run to
him with fake blood on me and telling him
that I cut my self. But as soon as I took my
hand off of my thumb and showed him, he let
out a shriek and asked me what happened. I
told him and told him to call an ambulance
because we were the only ones home and we
didn't have a car. The ambulance arrived just
as my mom got home so she took me to the
urgent care. There was so much blood just
pouring out, I never knew that a thumb could
bleed so much. It took about two hours after
I cut my self for a doctor to stitch it up. I
can't believe though that I went to the
urgent care with my thumb bleeding everywhere
like crazy and they made me sit in the
waiting room for almost an hour. While the
doctor was stitching me up he kept on making
jokes in order to make me more comfortable
and it was working until I felt this weird
warm sensation and he reveals to me that he
hit a capillary and my thumb was just oozing
blood again. Finally he was done with seven
stitches. That cut ruined my whole summer
vacation because it happened the very first
week of break and didn't heal completely
until almost the very beginning of the school
year. Plus it was my right thumb, so I
couldn't do that many things on my own. Oh,
and did I mention the pain. It didn't really
hurt that much when I cut it but while it was
healing it hurt so bad. Now I am stuck with
with a huge lump on my thumb that is very
sensitive.

Damn marylonmanson321 , that's a pretty gory story! I still have
loss of feeling along the scar, which is
pretty annoying. But at least they didn't
have to pull my whole thumbnail out!
