SPAM Musubi

SPAM Musubi (essentially "SPAM Sushi"), a popular snack in Hawaii. It can be found in mini-marts and convenience stores throughout.

I prepared rice which was then mixed with rice vinegar. Spam slices (ten of them per can) are marinated in a mixture of oyster sauce, sugar, and soy sauce, then cooked in oil (over low heat) for several minutes per side until lightly browned. Cooled rice and spam are pressed together in a cut-off portion of the spam container (this functions as a makeshift musubi press) over nori (dried seaweed). The nori is then tightly wrapped around the blocks. Some of these are plain, some have sesame seeds, and some have furikake (rice seasoning). After sampling a few, I wrapped pairs of musubi in plastic wrap for storage. Pretty tasty.
