HALEAKALA, MAUI, HAWAI'I, USA - April 2005 - Sunrise above the clouds at 10,000 feet, atop the Haleakala volcanic crater. Like some alien plant from Star Trek, the silversword in the foreground is found only atop Haleakala. They bloom once every 50 years.

The Hawaiian Islanders had never seen the color silver before finding these metalilic-looking plants growing high above the treeline, and called them "ahinahina" ("grey grey")...the nearest description they could think of.

I got up at 0430 to make the long drive to the crater, then hiked up to the very edge. Fantastic! Most tourists go to Maui for the beaches...but seeing the sun come up on the Haleakala summit inspired more awe than anything else on this trip.

If you go to Maui...trust me...YOU MUST DO THIS.
