Chandigarh, 2007
|
The planned city of Le Corbusier -- unlike any other city in India. Wide broad streets laid in a pattern with no illegal building or crowds of traffic lights. Indeed, people seemed to obey traffic rules. More surprisingly no cows. We visited the state secretariat and the hand sculpture that sits on the border.
Yet it is not the city, capital of both Punjab and Harayana that draws one to the city. This is the home of Nek Chand's enchanting Rock Garden. For more about the Garden see the foundation website: www.nekchand.com/index.html
In efforts to preserve the sculptures and walls, much is now behind fences that can be viewed from a distance. I longed to climb between the bangled women and men. We arrived mid-day with very bright winter sun with lots of people strolling through the park. This is my second trip to Chandigarh; it is an easy train from Delhi.
A Flickr search on "Nek Chand" fetches hundreds of images. If you can't stroll through the park, stroll through these images.
