This is the garden of Lamb House in Rye, Sussex. Lamb House, now in the care of the National Trust, was the home to three authors - Henry James, E. F. Benson and Rumer Godden.
Benson created the town of Tilling as a thinly disguised version of Rye.
Initially dominated by Miss Elizabeth Mapp, Miss Mapp's rule in Tilling is threatened by the arrived of Mrs Emmeline Lucas, known to her friends and enemies as Lucia.
Lamb House, renamed by Benson as 'Mallards' is initially the home of Miss Mapp. It subsequently becomes Lucia's to Mapp's disgust.
During one of the many episode of minor and trivial war between Mapp and Lucia, Lucia feigns illness and retreats from the social scene. Mapp, however, climbs the church tower and spots Lucia enjoying her callisthenic exercises in the garden.
This shot shows the view that Lucia might have had if she had been aware that she was being watched.

A clue which may resonate with a few,
perhaps: callisthenics

A cartographer's work and Donizetti's heroine
are associated with this garden.

Is this a scottish castle, that was the basis
for Walter Scott's Ravenswood?

This is not a Scottish castle, in fact the
tower doesn't belong to a castle at all. And
it's not in Scotland, either.
But you're right with Ravenswood as a character and heading rapidly to a correct answer to
that part of the clue...

You've reached the right county, Martin, but
this isn't Ravenswood Country Inn.

Rye, Sussex.
The church looks like St Mary's Parish
Church.

Well done, Martin - you have the right town.
Do you also have the name of the house of
which this is the garden?
For the bonus, I need the literary
significance of the tower of St Mary's with
respect to that garden. A bit of Googling
should unearth both of those fairly quickly
if you stick with my first clue.

I presume that the garden is that of Lamb
House, home to Henry James, but also where
E.F.Benson lived, and Rye is the model for
the fictional location of Tiling, where the
Mapp and Lucia series of books are set.
This link has all the literary connections
to Rye that you could want: www.btinternet.com/~parrothouse/EnglandSussex
.htm
The literary significance of the church
tower still escapes me however!

This is indeed the garden of Lamb House in
Rye, former home of authors Henry James, E.F.
Benson and Rumer Godden. You have the point
for that, Martin.
Callisthenics is still the clue which will bring the bonus.

"...you can climb the Church Tower and
try to catch a glimpse of the
spot where Lucia performed her
callisthenics “for those no longer
young”." from www.ryeheritage.co.uk/docs/UptheGardenPath.pd
f
So Lucia did Calisthenics on the church
tower at Tiling, which we now know was
modelled on Rye.
Is that good enough Webrarian :-)

Sadly not, Martin ;-)
It wasn't Lucia on the tower...

I have now found the text on the internet -
can't be bothered to read it though ;-)
However, I think I may have got it wrong
way round, was it Miss Mapp who climbed the
church tower to watch Lucia doing
Callisthenics (scantily clad I suspect) in
the garden? And what does this tell us about
Miss Mapp?

Lovely place, you have captured in
beautifully! Please feel free to check out my
pictures of Rye, many of which include sights
I spotted as being landmarks in 1980's
television series based on the Lucia books,
such as Swan House on Watchbell Street which
had to become Mallards on TV, mainly due to
the fact that Lamb House was too delicate to
be used by a TV crew and because the famous
Garden Room, mentioned in the books, was
sadly lost in WW2 thanks to Luftwafa!
