I've been having a hard time feeling good about what I've been working on art wise. I guess I'm kinda in a slump but I think I'm coming out of it. I've been reading a lot as always and listening to classical music so now I'm totally cultured and refined and whatnot. The most notable books in the group are:
1. Clerk Fluid
Disselected Essays
Fuck. Mark Flood is brilliant. He is one of my favorite people in Houston. He has supported me since the days of him stealing my art off the streets. Eventually we became friends because he reads what I read. He is much older and was in the awesome noise/punk band Culturcide which was one of the first punk bands to make an impact in Houston in the late 70s and early 80s. This book he printed is a series of essays he has written about art and the idiocy of the art world. He is a respected artist that has been making art about making art and all that that entails. From my small experience of the art world, shit is retarded. It's a bunch of self serving assholes posing as sophisticated, intelligent immortals. Nobody really cares about the art itself, they care more about selling bullshit to rich people so they can feel better about themselves when they look into the mirror at their bulging, coked out eyes. I could go on for days like this but I wouldn't be saying anything as interesting as the contents of Mark's book. It will be out soon so buy it if you like art. A great Culturcide lyric from 1980, "you cant buy class, but you can buy an mfa."

2. Giant Bruegel Book
25 bucks for this awesome 250 page book. Stuff of his I've never seen like his comiclike drawings that sold like crazy at the beginning of his career. So happy about finding this one.

3. Wittgenstein Biography
I'm not too big a fan of Wittgentein's philosophy. I mean I like what he is saying about language but It's too analytical and logical for my tastes. But I've come to realize that I like reading about philosophers more than I like reading philosophy. I was really happy to find out that he read Nietzsche and loved him (it still didnt change his mind about being a Christian) because that's my jam. He had a stereotypical artistic temperment which made him insanely moody and melancholic. And his life is really interesting because of it. Right now I'm at the part of his life where he is suffering through ww1 in the German army. It's really good.

That's all I have to say about books. The other two are Giles Deleuze's Pure Immanence and Italo Calvino's THe Castle of Crossed Destinies. I'm not as into these two but they are pretty interesting.

	Dimension Hatröss says: It's hard not to get in a slump. It's good to seek inspiration from all over though sometimes that ends up giving you this massive amount of ideas all at once. They usually all get sorted out in your brain over a few days and are added to an ever growing pile of imagination. Bruegel rules by the way. 	wtftw says: I have been reading Nietzsche since I was 17 but I wasnt really old enough to totally get it. It was way above my head but I knew that I was reading something that I really, really wanted to understand. I cant say that I feel any smarter now but I understand him much better now. Kaufmann is sooooooooo important to the history of Nietzsche scholarship but I ignored his biography for a loooooong time until February when I read it. By far the best Nietzsche biography I have ever read. Right around the time I was reading that some friends of mine that are ubereducated and fun to talk to swore that Nietzsche fucked his sister. I defended him as I always do and Kaufmann helped me in that task. THen a few weeks later I was browsing the philosophy section at the library and I stumbled upon an old ass stinky(good old book smelling stinky though) book called "My Sister and I" by Friedrich Nietzsche. I checked it out and read it in two days. Supposedly Nietzsche wrote the book while he was in the insane asylum or wherever he was while he was crazy. It was totally fun to read and the writer was obviously familiar with Nietzsche's thought and style. I wikipediaed it and found that it was in fact not written by Nietzsche. It totally sensationalized his relationship with Lou Salome and flat out stated Nietzsche fucked his sister all the time when he was young. My favorite quotes from the book: "I am a man of genius. Therefore I can afford to smile or spit at you." "Everything can be acquired in solitude- except sanity."and The irony of my life is that I praise the strong, sympathize with the weak, and bear an unquenchable love for the utterly hopeless. It is this impossible contradiction in my life which reconciles me to my present dwelling among the lesser gods." It was over the top but kinda fun to read like an intellectual National Enquirer. Then last night at the video store I saw a movie called "When Nietzsche Wept." It looked really fucking dumb but I couldnt help wanting to watch it. I threw it on and was cursing at the tv from the moment it started. But as I slowly got more and more drunk I kinda actually started to like it. The plot is that Lou Salome (played by a really hot actress with a horrible fake Austrian accent, which is good because Lou Salome always looks hot but I cant make out if she really was or if I just want to believe she was hot) gets a doctor to see Nietzsche to cure him of his despair while also curing his migraines. The doctor reads Nietzsche's books and becomes obsessed with him. They meet, he asks to treat him, Nietzsche tells him to fuck off, Nietzsche goes and fucks hookers, Gets a migraine, Bangs his head on a mirror as an attempt to commit suicide, the doctor saves him, Nietzsche agrees to be treated by him. Then they talk and bond over how evil women are and how hard they are to be with or without. All this is happening under the nose of Sigmund Freud who is friends with the Doctor. The doctor and Nietzsche basically hang out and talk about dreams and psychoanalysis is born. IT was maddening to watch how historically inaccurate the movie was but it was an interesting attempt to make a film based off of this premise. Nietzsche is probably my favorite writer and I love the little idea of who Nietzsche was that bounces around in my head. I really believe that I will never outgrow my obsession with Nietzsche. He said too much for me to ever believe that I really fully comprehend the depth of the abyss that he created. That was a long winded reply, dude. Posted 3 months ago. ( permalink )
