Just over an inch and a half thick.
NT$420 per 100g or US$58.11 per pound.
25°2' 27" N, 121°34' 36" E25.0409 121.5766
NT$2520/US$76.86 (!!!). That is one massively expensive piece of steak.
It was good beef, but not that good, if you know what I'm saying. For 80 bucks I was expecting the best piece of steak I've ever had or near it, but it was only very good. I've had steak so good it made me want to weep. This did not make me want to weep (well, maybe a little, but that's only because I'm weeping for my poor wallet). On a scale of 1 to 10, I would score it a 7+ or maybe even a 8- (depending on my mood).

I have never wept over steak.. I dont think I
am capable of that .. wonder if that means I
am not experiencing life!
This would definitely make me weep tho,
even before opening the pack. I might want
to frame it instead of eating it.

If you're spending 2500 kuai on beef, why are
you getting Australian beef? Just trade up
and get the American. It has much nicer
flavor...

The American beef was much cheaper, actually.
The most expensive cut of American steak that
they carried at that supermarket was NT$160
per 100g (versus the $420 per 100g that this
one was).

Why American beef? It sucks. Cows are not
meant to eat corn.

You are right, brady ftae , but in Taiwan, decent beef is hard to find
(for me). I've had some hit and miss
experiences here - with the most reliable
being the American. The worst all around
seems to be the local Taiwan beef *shudder*,
the next worst is the NZ, and then the AUS is
ok, the US is the least bad on a consistent
basis. When I was home in Seattle in
November, I kept gorging on Angus beef
burgers and drinking good Tom Collinses. Mmm.

sometimes you just gotta try stuff in order
to know if it's worth it or not. think of it
this way, a huge piece of wagye rib eye this
size - compare it to the one at craftsteak in
new york where it's $250 ....... and
they're not cooking it any better ...
also major steakhouses age their steaks ,
therein lies their better flavor , although
even that's not guaranteed . the way it's
cooked makes a huge difference as i found out
at craftsteak with their 42 day aged hawaiian
which was bland.

The real point might just to eat what is
local. You aren't going to find much Chinese
food in NYC as delicious as you can find in
Taiwan. Ah, beef noodle soup with knife cut
noodles. Sigh. And good luck finding an
edible al pastor taco in Taipei! (Ok, maybe
things have changed, but I doubt by that
much).

Well said, Jo Jo .
And brappy , I definitely agree that local Taiwanese
beef is not the best and whatever imported
beef that are available also tend to suck. In
the mid-to-low-range restaurants here in
Taiwan, if they offer choices of beef, it
usually goes: Taiwanese cheapest, AU/NZ
middle and American most expensive.
But you have to remember that we are
talking about wagyu beef here, not regular
beef. Wagyu refers to special breeds of
cattle that are genetically predisposed to
intense marbling (Kobe beef being the most
famous of these breeds). So we are not
comparing apples to apples. If American-bred
wagyu beef were available here (as far as I
know they are not available here), it could
very well be better than the Australian ones.
But Australian wagyu should in theory be
significantly better than regular beef from
anywhere.

雨笙 ... and the expensive restaurants don't even
serve beef. :-P I missed the wagyu part -
I've not even seen it in the US. I miss
having a kitchen! Excuse me while I wander
off to sulk over a cup of coffee.

What was I thinking buying such expensive
beef? As discussed above, good beef is hard
to come by here in Taipei. You gotta pay
through the nose just to get something
half-decent. And if that's not bad enough, on
top of the expensive beef, you have to
overpay to get a decent bottle of wine to go
with it. So for a slab of meat and some wine
at home you are looking at over a hundred
dollars. These are things I used to take for
granted back in the States.
