this wasn't some inner circle of "favoured members" who got any kind of extra special input into the fundamental nature of the new features. the beta group was mostly filled with the kind of help forum nerds who happen to know some of the more arcane areas and settings of the site to find such problems. i recall a number of "anti-video" help forum nerds in the group too.

It's not that, it's that I want it to be democratically run. When video debuted on Flickr there were tons of complaints but to the degree Flickr deigned to respond at all, it was along the lines of "[meaningless platitudes about listening to members], but we'll do whatever we feel like."

"It's not that, it's that I want it to be democratically run."

democracy does not equal "loudest complaints win"

at this point, more people have uploaded video than have ever complained about it, so democratically speaking flickr made the right decision.

It doesn't???? Holy shit. I'm not sure who that's addressed to but it ain't me. You keep pulling this straw man bit.

at this point, more people have uploaded video than have ever complained about it, so democratically speaking flickr made the right decision.

I'd be really curious how you determined that, but I do know that the groups against video are larger and more numerous than those for it.

So it's anti-democratic. If they'd had a referendum it would have lost. And the reason the Flickr community didn't want it is that it made the nature of the community so amorphous that it's not really sure what it is anymore. (Cue moronic "love it or leave it" comments.)

Oh NOES! Video haz stoled my IDENTITY!

"I'd be really curious how you determined that, but I do know that the groups against video are larger and more numerous than those for it"

Gosh, what a MASSIVE surprise that is. In other news, people send in more complaints about stuff on TV than they do letters saying "loved the camera work and plot".

Democracy my arse. You seem to be mistaking Flickr for a country. Democracy for a private company *is* loving it or leaving it. If you think that's moronic, then you are overly optimistic about the free market.

One need only search to see that there have been over a million public, safe videos uploaded ... even if each person who has uploaded video had uploaded an average of 20 videos, that means 50,000+ people have uploaded videos. Show me an "anti-video" group with more than 50,000 people and maybe I'll think that more people are against it than for it.

I am not clear why you are talking like a character in blackface.

You obviously haven't opened a newspaper in the last few weeks if you think there's such a thing as a "free market". But if Flickr's official policy is "fuck you, we do what we want and don't care what members' wishes are", let them make it public. Otherwise I reserve the right to posit what I think would be a better Flickr.
Pacdog 13 years ago
Is there not a thread for whining about video on Flickr already posted? This thread was started to discuss JPG Mag and their issues (I started the thread!) not Flickr video. Please try to stick to topic.

That comment is not only hideously misguided, it is borderline inappropriate. Please think a little harder before going any further down that road.

Free markets have nothing to do with the complete individual freedom a company has with their own project.

What does any of this have to do with free donuts?
sgoralnick 13 years ago
i'd also like to point out (as was done earlier) that the comment:

"Their closure is not lossless."

is hysterical.
carie.bauer 13 years ago
wow. you're really out of touch. you seem to be pretty naive as to how companies, countries, businesses and even statistics work. And the blackface comment? wow. I'd say that's not even borderline, but pretty clearly lame. we get it. you don't like videos. there's plenty of groups for that.
Pacdog 13 years ago
Heh... I can always count on Brock to stick to the topic. =o)

Jake? I have a donut from last year waiting for you still..

in da fridge..

from the JPG Blog:

Some of you may have heard by now, but if not, the good news is that we have already received a couple of credible offers from companies interested in acquiring JPG. So that we can find the best acquirer for JPG, we put a Wednesday deadline on all offers, and we expect to receive more by then. We are soliciting all the credible offers we can get, and any negotiations from that point forward will be handled by Minor Ventures. This is an important part of the process, since any deal will need to be approved by our board. All we, along with the rest of the team, are hoping for is that we can find the best new home for the JPG community.

for those who do care about the subject or about JPG.

, wow, back on topic... wonders will never cease.

That's interesting. I wonder what kind of offers they consider credible offers. Ones that go along the lines of, "Hi, we'll buy your company for $1 and take on your debt," perhaps.

He *was* talking like a character in blackface and I called him out for it. I suggest you see Bamboozled and try to learn about the history of minstrel shows. It's not "lame"--that's like saying a cross-burning is lame. Trying to rate it on some sad hipster coolness scale just doesn't cut it. Honestly, your ignorance on the subject makes me sad.

he was talking in LOLspeak, and his comment had no racial component whatsoever.

Hi James. I'm Paul aka Pacdog and I would like to invite you to go to.. Screw it! I did a search for video threads in FC and found THIS!!. It seems once again You win James as you have seemed to take over my thread about JPG. I hate you now.. Well hate is not the word I was really going for. I feel sorry for you as I hate you mmmkayy?
elementalPaul 13 years ago
Wow, this thread's gone off at a tangent.

I'm amused (and slightly perplexed) when people mistake Flickr for a democracy.

Sorry Pacdog, I didn't really help the thread get back on topic.

Ok - that was quite the tangent indeed.

Further contributions on the topic of JPG Mag are welcome.

Somewhere earlier (sorry not reading through the dross to find it) there was a quote from the jpg blog saying they had set a Wednesday deadline for offers. Any news?

Not so far, but I've never been able to get my head round time zone differences, so I've no idea what time or indeed day it is in jolly old Saint Frank.

Are you a troll? You must be, right? That's the only possible explanation for the completely bizarre way you've been going on throughout this thread.

"i'd also like to point out (as was done earlier) that the comment:

is hysterical."

Only just figured that out. Pure genious!

everyone got the email

We couldn't ask for a better community. In the week or so since our last email , the outpour of support has exceeded our wildest expectations. Your efforts, such as starting savejpg.com, writing blog posts, commenting on Twitter and Flickr, and generally making your voices heard, have provided exciting new opportunities for us.

We're thrilled to say that because of you, we have multiple credible buyers interested in giving JPG a home. We will be keeping the site up after all, and hope to have a final update in the next week or so on who the acquirer will be. Thank you for making all of this possible.

"We're thrilled to say that because of you, we have multiple credible buyers interested in giving JPG a home"

at this point i'm not convinced. how many is multiple? 2? why so public about "potential" buyers, when the biggest reported potential buyer says they have no interest and never have had an interest. the only other "buyer" who has come out publicly is smugmug, but only while also asking investors at large for "help" in making the purchase.

it feels like someone is really trying to engineer a bidding war, and isn't above spreading unfounded information to do so.

i mean, you've got techcrunch saying "Don’t Count JPG Magazine Out Just Yet, Sale May Close Next Week" on jan 3rd .. and "next week" comes and goes with the only news being that the largest alleged suitor wasn't actually a suitor.

this very public posturing about potential buyers is all about 8020 Media endeavouring to appear more desired than they actually are.
Pacdog 13 years ago
I have stated this before and will state it again.

TechCrunch is not high on my list of folks I put much belief into.

I have my reasons and no I will not talk about them here.

Blog updated on the 4th.

A Quick Note about the Issue Themes

Posted by Laura Brunow Miner on 4 February 2009.

Hi guys-

The deadline for the issue 21 themes was yesterday, and in order to keep them open longer, I added the same three themes to issue 22. It's not a perfect solution, but it was the best I could do from home, and without a tech team. You may have noticed your votes go away -- I apologize for that unintended side effect.

We would love to swoop in and fix everything, but have to wait. Talks are still in progress with acquirers, and we are just as eager as you are to have something worked out. We promise to keep you posted!

well 7 months later it seems they are still online.

I'm too lazy to figure out what happened, but it seems they are not going anywhere.
