The Carlton Hotel in downtown Tyler, Texas, more recently known as the Smith County Office Building, may be renovated within two years as a hotel, apartments or perhaps any number of other uses. A local architect has purchased the 115,000 square foot building and has pledged to renovate it into something useful. The building closed as a hotel in the 1970s and has served as a county office building until its closure a few years ago. The building has deteriorated considerably, but its structure is sound and the possibilities are endless. I hope to see a renovation which will enhance its mid-century modern qualities.
