There will be a "Tools" blog posting up soon on www.indicommons.org, but one of the benefits of being active members here is that we play with this stuff first.

Update, Striatic has made his very digestible summary of this available on the IndiCommons - Tools Page.

So for all those who know and love GreaseMonkey (A popular and powerful FireFox Browser Extension) and the ways it can make flickr a more enjoyable experience... we have our first Commons specific greasemonkey script:

GM Script - FlickrStayInCommons by clickykbd

On Flickr.com, adds an option to the header [search] dropdown to take you directly to a search for "The Commons" content. Also on photos within "The Commons" project, inserts additional "tag links" that jump to listings restricted to just "The Commons".

Quick Install Link

Please, if you find bugs in it's behavior do leave a comment on that screenshot photo in my stream or use the features at UserScripts.org to report.

Can you think of other ways to augment the experience of browsing the commons?

Thanks- this is great. Some tools to browse by date ranges would be interesting- it would be tricky since some photos use the description, and others use the "additional information" field.

Wow, it's great to see this. I actually can't think of any feature requests right now, but I'm sure I will. I take my hat off to you, especially that you chose to put your skill to work on such a great cause, and shared it with everyone. Look forward to seeing what others come up with.

i know that flickr is going to eventually incorporate "circa" dating, at which point the dates on the photos would be machine readable.

that's probably a better point to add browsing by date ranges.

i think it's great that in this short time clickykbd has added what i think are two pieces of vital functionality to the Commons Community arsenal:

www.indicommons.org/tools/#custom-flickr-commons-feeds

and

www.indicommons.org/tools/#stay-in-commons-greasemonkey-s...

thank-ya. In all respects my hacks should also read as "flickr commons feature requests". Hopefully the eyes of flickr dev's are watching and all my efforts will be made obsolete by built in site features "soon". ;-)

Woo-hoo!

This script is so cool, clicky.
This makes it so much more fun to romp around the Commons.

Thanks!

And yeah, i second your hope that some of this stuff will be incorporated by flickr
: )

I did think of another nice thing to add... and luckily it is very similar to one that was out there for the larger flickr. So without further ado:

There goes the last hope of me doing anything useful today.
These are awesome, thanks for the hard work!

Glad to have been a hindrance! ;-)

Now ignores things you already favorited and has pretty new sidebar display option:

Uninstall the old one then, you can use this link to grab the new userscript.

Otherwise visit this photo for more info and documentation.

Updated Script: FlickrStayIncommons v0.2.2
Get it here:

A minor bug fix for the new search roll-out by flickr, it was loosing the "commons search" state when going from the dropdown menu link.
