FlickrHack: YouTubr

YouTubr is a Greasemonkey script that adds a YouTube button beneath a flickr photo whenever the photo's description contains a (clickable) link to a YouTube video (see an example).

Then by clicking on the YouTube button, the photo is swapped with the video, so that the video may be viewed inside the flickr photo page.

To use YouTubr you must be using the Firefox browser with the Greasemonkey extension installed. Then you may install YouTubr by going here and clicking on “Install this script”.

You are encouraged to add any flickr photo with a YouTube link in the description to the YouTubr group pool so that
• anyone may view the entire pool using YouTubr
• I may use it as a test collection to test and improve YouTubr
• the size of the pool may serve as an indication of YouTubr's popularity
• the membership of your photo in the pool visible on your photo's page may lead to other users discovering YouTubr (and consequently watching that same video without leaving that photo's page!)

this didn't seem to work for me.

i just ended up with the grey bar underneath like in the image on the left.

oh .. you have to click the you tube icon?

that wasn't clear at first.

Using the script will be simpler and clearer in future versions... don't worry :)

nice script. one issue i have found is that if an image has flickr notes, when you switch over to the youtube video, the boxes from the notes show up over the youtube video. any way to hide those?

moorz, I'm glad it's working for you.

For the toggle button to appear, there must be a link to a YouTube video embedded in the description i.e. there must be some text inside the description that when clicked will take you to the YouTube video page.

Links to YouTube videos normally look like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRyrAIpzCsk or http://youtube.com/watch?v=MRyrAIpzCsk
For a particular YouTube video, you may obtain this link from its YouTube page from the box to the right of the video, from inside the textbox labeled "URL".

Then if you insert somewhere inside the description the following code:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRyrAIpzCsk">see my video here<a/>
then when you save your description, it will look like this:
see my video here
This serves two purposes. Users who don't have youtubr installed may click on this link to leave the flickr page and go to the YouTube page to watch the video.

On the other hand, users with youtubr installed will be able to watch the video inside the flickr page by clicking on the button. This is possible because youtubr recognizes the link that you would have inserted as being a link to a YouTube video, and rather than waiting for you to click on the link, it fetches the video itself, displays a YouTube button, and swaps the photo with the fetched video when you press the button.

In a future version of youtubr, I will simplify this by adding some button on the YouTube page which when clicked will copy the link... and a button on the flickr page which when clicked will add the code for the link to the description.

Life will then be just a bit more easier :)

You are welcome to add to the youtubr pool any flickr photo having a YouTube link in its description.

Can you whip this up for Vimeo too! I don't like u-tube on several principles... but vimeo feels happy and flickr-like.

Had a look at the Vimeo embed code…

Yes I can. I'll add it when I have time. Thanks for suggestion.
Dailymotion would be cool too ;-)

Yes that's an old userscript....
:-)
But i am curious if it can be revived.
and maybe add a support for GIF visualisation in place of the static shot ?
