New to rag rugs

Hi all, I ran across this group as I was looking for rag rugging instructions. I just purchased Diana Blake Gray's book and I should receive it today. I've been practicing in the meantime and realized quickly I needed to brush up on my single crochet. I've found some materials and have started tearing and sewing the ends together. I can't wait to get started. I'm hoping to have some placemats soon!

I have always loved rag rugs, but thought the price people wanted for making them was bit out there(no matter how much I wanted one). So I decided to make my own. I think it will mean more by making it myself anyways. So far, I've found two really good tuturials @ and I have attempted two rugs so far (both unfinished). I started my first one w/the knotting technic and my second w/the crocheting technic. I actually prefer the crocheting. However, I still have the problem w/bowling and waving issues in my rug. I have discovered that there is no "exact" mathematical way to go about this and you just have to get a feel for what works with your own rug. I'm enjoying the process and can't wait to complete a rug!
