I am a Burlington, Ontario-based outdoor photographer and blogger ( Russ Campbell's Blog) and a wannabe naturalist… hakuna matata.

I shoot with a Nikon D800 digital SLR plus:

• AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4 VR wide angle zoom

• AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G VR midrange zoom

• AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR telephoto zoom

• AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime

• AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 telephoto prime.

My backup is a Canon G12 compact camera.

For distant birds, I sometimes use a teleconverter: Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 1.4x, Nikon 1.7x TC-17E II or Nikon 2x TC-20E III. And for close-ups I use Kenko extension tubes.

For printing, I use an Epson R1800.

I shoot in RAW format and process/catalogue my images in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom on a dual-display Windows 8 PC. For creative work, I use Affinity Photo and ON1 Photo Raw.

I do very much appreciate constructive criticism of my images and look forward to hearing from you.

I am not a wildlife photographer as such, but rather, I'm an outdoor photographer. Consequently, be aware that some images shown here have been taken under controlled circumstances, and this fact may not always be disclosed in individual posts. The captive animals and birds used, however, are usually rescued and cannot be returned to the wild because of permanent, disabling injuries or the fact that a bird may have imprinted—usually while being rehabilitated—on humans and can no longer survive in the wild. Some animals have been born in captivity and been “rescued” by authorities so they can receive professional care. In such cases, I use zoos, aquaria, animal sanctuaries, research centers, rehabilitation and rescue centers that do not exist primarily for photography. They all employ a professional staff of caretakers, with access to veterinarians and nutritionists, and keep their animals in reasonable enclosures with adequate space. Photography is merely a way of helping to defray some of the facilities’ operating costs.

Do not rely on my images as documents of record for editorial use.

My photographs—for the most part—are not documents of record or intended strictly for editorial use, but rather, they are works of art that portray reality as I wish to portray it. Accordingly, I sometimes remove unwanted elements from my images, e.g., people, birds, animals, branches, utility poles, wires, trash and such. I also use techniques that involve combining images to make panoramas and achieve extreme depth of field. Infrequently, I will make composites for aesthetic purposes. In other words, I will take any post-processing action I believe is necessary to make a more appealing image. Write a testimonial

It has been my pleasure to know Russ, and spend tome shooting with him on a few occasions, definitely one of the more informed fellows I know of, and I am honoured to call Russ a friend.
