I have always been fascinated by the human face. There are almost eight billion human faces on this planet which are changing every second in order to adjust their senses, optimize perception and communicate. Thereby, these faces create an incredible diversity of expressions, offering a unique bouquet of information to other humans. That's what I capture with the camera, but "...my first 10,000 photographs are my worst." (in accordance with Henri Cartier-Bresson).

Comments, questions and suggestions are welcomed; the more specific and detailed the better. Please keep ads, badges, and awards for yourself; they will be deleted anyway. I do appreciate all forms of feedback and criticism (p.c. and non-p.c., "positive" and "negative", "reasonable" and "unreasonable" - offence cannot be given, only taken).

I am also fascinated by the face for the range and depth of emotion it communicates. Tradition gives the heart the role of seat of the human soul. But I think it may be closer to the surface than we are willing to notice. Paging through Mr. Hahnewald’s photographs I see a fascinating record of the beauty of all humanity including some of the practices that use the face in ways that are unimaginable outside the culture of the photo’s subject. I found myself wanting to comment on every portrait as I paged through. I don’t have time to write them; Mr. Hahnewald doesn’t have time to read them. I simply say here that this is one of the most wonderful collections I have encountered on Flickr or anywhere else. Thank you to helena blanco for leading me to this collection. And thank you Mr. Hahnewald for doing this work and sharing the images through Flickr.

A long overdue testimonial to one of the most inspiring photographers on Flickr. The diversity of the human face beautifully captured. With every face a whole life story behind it. What a beautiful and wonderful project.
