A dance is in order!
Even if the season is not quite right! Western Grebes practicing their mating dances, Sept 18th 2016. Salmon Arm, BC.
This was a complete surprise. I saw these two, and several others (including one followed by a youngster) near the pier. Had my camera trained on them when I noticed they seemed to be doing the "dipping their head in the water" ritual... and suddenly, up they went! Quite a distance but it was thrilling to see this!
I guess they do this at all times of year. I would have thought that whiney youngster would have been a bit of a discouragment :-).
