Specimen Study: Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda)

18 Jun 2011: Hackberry Flat W.M.A. An unusual record for SW OK. Upland Sandipers are not thought to nest in sw. OK. While retrieving this recent roadkill near the Hackberry Center, another individual made repeated circling flights around us overhead calling all the while as if this may have represented a mated pair. Migrants can be on the move southward by mid-June but it is hard to explain this behaviour in a migrant, especially as it would have been lingering long enough for ants to have found the carcass.
