Ring-necked Duck - Aythya collaris - adult male
A common duck of freshwater ponds during the breeding season in western North America, it confounds many people why this duck is not named Ring-billed Duck. There is a chestnut collar on the bottom of the neck on the male but it is hard to see without a close look. As well, both male and females sport rings on the bill at all seasons. Maybe the powers that be will come to their senses one day. George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Ladner, BC. Dec 28, 2013.
