Şanlıurfa is the 'Place of Abraham'
Şanlıurfa was the birthplace of Abraham, who is known as the father of the 3 Abrahamic religions. It is also the city where, because of his monotheistic beliefs, Abraham was thrown into a fire by Nimrod. A miracle occurred transforming the into water and the burning coals into fish, and it is this belief that has turned the site of the miracle into Şanlıurfa's most visited tourist attraction, Balıklıgöl (Pool of the Sacred Fish ). The cave where it is believed Abraham was born, the place where he fell into the fire, and the many mosques and madrassas surrounding the Pool of the Sacred Fish, have all shaped Şanlıurfa into a spiritual centre.
