The Haghpat Monastery

The Monastery of Haghpat is approximately 4 kilometers northeast of the Monastery of Sanahin, and are in plain sight of each other but are separated by a deep gorge that runs through the plateau both monasteries are located on.

Haghpat was founded in the 10th century by Queen Khosrovanuysh of the Bagratid Kingdom, around the same time the Sanahin Monastery was founded.

The monastery is located on a mountain cirque, often concealed by clouds, that overlooks the valley of the river Debed and soon after a village developed around Haghpat.
