Small landslide in Beus Pond Park
Pictured is an area in Beus Pond park in Ogden, Utah, where a small landslide had recently occurred. This photo was taken around 2 pm on November 1st, 2018. There were many trees that had fallen in the area and the soil was very loose and soft. This is an example of a natural disturbance that can allow for secondary succession to occur. By knocking down these larger trees, it may give other organisms a chance to grow. More sunlight will reach the ground and humidity will decrease which may allow smaller, early successional plants to grow. Fallen trees can also be used as habitat by fungi and insects. Disturbances such as this one can increase species diversity especially in an area like this where trees dominate the plant community.
