Wings of Decay

Last year, local authorities decided to put an end to an enormous car graveyard situated in the small village of Kaufdorf, near Bern, Switzerland.

Before they cleaned up the place, the owners organized several "open house" days, a boon for photographers and car lovers...

While one must admit that decaying cars being overgrown by trees and bushes make for both very aesthetic settings and rather fitting political statements about the future of individual transport, I visited the graveyard with a very uneasy feeling. So many cars, happily leaking all sorts of deadly chemicals, that have been just sitting there for since 1933... Just thinking of the lead batteries make me sick. Attempts to transform the graveyard into a museum failed and the owners tried also to sell the wrecks to the public before starting to clean everything up in October this year.

Anyway. Enough ecological guilt for now, here comes the rusted glory!
