The square tapered tower is 20.7 m (67.7 ft) tall and was built in 1875. It is the Island's tallest lighthouse at the tip of West Point where the waters of the Northumberland Strait and Egmont Bay merge.

The West Point Lighthouse Inn, Museum and Restaurant was established in 1984. The lighthouse is maintained as a navigational aid beacon, although the living quarters of the lighthouse are now used as a unique country inn and museum.
Cedar Dunes Provincial Park is located at West Point and provides a supervised public beach for swimming.
