Had to be quick, was driving through Episkopi when I saw this vulture flying over. Had to stop the car somewhere and manage to focus on the bird against the light and before it drifted too far away. This is unfortunately the best I managed.
In Cyprus a resident breeding species in serious decline; only 17 birds remained in 2009, possibly only 9 by the end of 2010 (Cyprus Birdlife, 2011).
Recently a small number of Griffon Vultures have been brought in from Crete to increase the local population. Currently they are still kept in cages so as to acclimate themeslves before being released into the wild. If they were to be released immediately there would be a possibility even that they would try to fly back to Crete.
