Even a modest- sized pantechnicon like this one, needs to have 3-axles because of the restrictive maximum axle weights applicable here in New Zealand. Many as-built 4x2 chassis are modified locally before hitting the NZ roads, by adding a trailing (non-driven) rear axle to achieve a higher gross weight and therefore a sufficient payload, without the risk of overloading the 8-tonne single axle limit.
