Apparent "Kumlien's" Iceland Gull, Lompoc CA
A first-cycle (first winter) gull showing the characteristics of Larus glaucoides kumlieni. Lompoc, CA February 19, 2009. This photo best shows the head and bill shape, which are more thayeri than kumlieni in type. These will be the strongest argument against this bird as pure "Kumlien's Gull". Postscript: I share the opinion of many that "pure" Kumlien's is a fiction, believing the bird to be midway on a genetic continuum between glaucoides at one end and thayeri at the other. Subsequently rejected as kumlein's Iceland Gull by the CBRC.
