Common Ringed Plover

California's fifth record of this Eurasian vagrant, the Common Ringed Plover, Semipalmated Plovers in the foreground, a Least Sandpiper behind.

Although the species breeds in very small numbers on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, its breeding range otherwise extends across the northern edge of Eurasia. The species winters around the Arabian Peninsula, East and Southern Africa. The origin of this adult male is unknown of course, most likely it's of Siberian origin, moving southward along the coast of the "wrong" continent. Morro Bay Sand Spit, San Luis Obispo County, California.
