A very aggressive swooping Magpie...

Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen)

It looks very calm in the photo, but this magpie really gave me some hard time.

I had parked my car near the picnic area in Lake Maraboon. As soon as I got out of the car, she began attacking me. As I had already seen a lot of warnings about swooping, I understood that she should have her nest in the area. I entered the car, went down a dirt road and parked at a reasonable distance from the first place. But this wasn't enough for her! As soon as I got out of the car, she began attacking me again. And so smart! She only attacked me by the back. When I was facing her, she was on the ground or perching in the car.

She never really hurt me, but all the times I gave her my back, I could hear her wings very close to my head. I finally lost my patience and showed it, and I walked away towards the lake. This seemed to result and she flew away. Of, course, when I got back to the car, I was afraid of being attacked again. But, happily, it didn't happen.

I must say that, after this, I was a little worried every time I saw a member of the species :) But this was the only time that it happened. Thank God, because it's a litlle scary!
