Black-headed Pitohui - Pitohui dichrous

Wau Ecology Institute, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.

Shortly after this photo was taken, this species was the first bird to be found to be poisonous. The poison is a range of batrachotoxin compounds in its skin, feathers and other tissues. Poinson arrow frogs from Central and South America have the same toxins in the skin secretions. These toxins are thought to be derived from the pitohui's diet. From Kodachrome slide taken during expedition to PNG while with the Bishop Museum. Photo taken January 1984 and scanned 2018.
