Raisting Radom

Raisting, at the southern end of the Ammersee lake in Bavaria (Germany), is an earth station for satellite communications with huge parabolic dishes. It was gradually extended and is now the largest of its kind in the world.

For me it’s magic and one of the most fascinating places in the proximity where I live. If you like this place too, you might be interested in my set about Raisting where you can find some more interesting photos of the earth station.

Until 2001 the Deutsche Telekom ran there an Inmarsat Land Earth Station (LES) for Atlantic east and Indian ocean. Ships, airplanes and land mobiles can use the Inmarsat satellites for telephone calls, e-mail, telex, fax, and SMS. Inmarsat is a worldwide organisation running geostationary satellites in an orbit 36,000 km high. They cover the earth surface except the poles in four areas: Atlantic ocean east and west, Indian ocean and Pacific.

The first facilities of the land earth station in Raisting were built back in 1963. The historical and famous antenna 1 with its 25 m diameter is protected by an air-inflated plastic Radom (Radar-Dome) with a diameter of 48 m. It was built for the Intelsat-1 satellite (Early Bird) in 1964 and is the fifth-oldest satellite antenna in the world, but it is no longer in use today and has the status of a monument nowadays. In summertime it is used for open air cinema acitivities.

1967 a second antenna was built in Raisting, 1972 a third one for the television coverage of the Olympic Games in Munich.

The Raisting Earth Station Complex and Telehouse is now one of the three largest teleport facilities worldwide and has 19 antennas and 120,000 square feet of data center facilities. The large antenna complex includes two 32m, two 28.5m, one 18m, one 15m, one 13m, seven 11m and 4 other sizes antennas to operate services in all satellite bands.

Deutsche Telekom sold the remaining facilities in Raisting to EMC (Emerging Markets Communications) in January 2006.
