Former Brach's Candy Factory, West Side of Chicago
By the bag
Or by the box,
Candy to shout about
Comes from BRACH'S!
If you remember that commercial jingle, you're old enough to remember when this plant hummed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, its 3,500 workers turning out the pink-and-white packaged confections that made Christmases, Halloweens, Valentine's Days and Easters so very special.
Alas, Brach's is no longer headquartered in Chicago, and its candy manufacturing operations have moved elsewhere, as have so many other Chicago-based industries over the last 50 years.
If you're waiting for a "but look on the bright side", there isn't any. Inner-city young people, this sight should scare you to DEATH, especially if you think you can sleep through 12 years of grammar school and high school and graduate on Friday and start working in a factory on Monday. That. Ain't. Happenin'. Get used to it.
