This AMAZING woodpecker was one of those birds of the trip you will never forget..!.. we were tired of working all day long a trail looking for Sooty-capped Puffbird, and returning to our base house camp, we had to cross big pineapple fields... this big brown-backed bird flew only 2 m away from mark and I and landed in an isolated young Cecropia tree in the middle of the pineapple field just 4 m away from Elaine... I said Great Kiskadee and continued talking with Mark.. when I realized how big this bird was and the kind of flight was not OK for a flycatcher; I put my bins on and yelled to Elaine CIINAAMOOON WOOOODPEEECKEEER!... everything started there, this bird came to have its meal just before going to bed!,, the woodpecker was only 3-4 m from us and so so busy eating ants from the Cecropia that did not give anything as we 6 people observed it very very close.... what a bird!!!
Some videos of this woodpecker here so you can get a nice close glimpse of it:
