20071014 Tower Bridge
In July of 2000 my car was in the shop for a full month. I had a funeral to go to, and a friend coming from Boston to visit. I decided to take the Yolo Bus from Davis to the airport to get a rental car for a week. As we approached Tower Bridge on the bus, we were delayed. The barriers went up and the warning lights flashed, as the center section of the bridge was about to rise to allow a boat to pass.
The bus driver knew it would take a while, so she opened the door so people could pop out to watch, or smoke a cigarette. A woman, who was most likely mentally disturbed, decided she would just walk across the bridge. The warnings go off some time before the center section begins to rise.
She got out on that center section, and then was carried up into the air. When it came back down again, she came back to the bus, but she was freaked out. The adrenaline was rushing and she was muttering while just looking totally frenzied. Then the siren went off to notify us that the barriers would be going down. The bus driver was anxious to get under way, and that woman was the only one not back on the bus. She yelled at the woman, "GET BACK ON THE BUS! GET BACK ON THE BUS!" This freaked out the poor woman even more, and she started up into the bus and back down the steps and up the steps and back down in utter confusion and panic.
Right now it is up even higher than it usually goes, for construction.
