House Sparrows

House Sparrow males. These are gradually assuming breeding plumage. The bright plumage isn't actually moulted in for spring. This plumage was moulted in last summer/autumn and the feathers had long buff fringes covering the bright plumage underneath as well as giving extra insulation for winter. Now that spring has arrived these buff fringes are wearing off exposing the bright chestnuts, blacks and greys below.
