Redpoll ( Carduelis flammea cabaret ). 2.1.2009, Tornio.
I haven`t added much of ringing pics or bird-in-the-hand pics here, but Redpolls are so small and nice birds in the hand so why not....and it`s also a good example that its possible to hold a bird safe in the hand.
Variation in redpolls is quite big, there are small and big ones....if You can call a bird that weighs 17 grams big:)
I`ve been ringing a little over 500 Redpolls, but never have had in my hands so brown bird than this was. Bird was also smaller than they use to be...( Wing 71 mm / weight 13.3 g ).
Anyway there`s a more southern subspecie Carduelis flammea cabaret which this might be...
I did send also a question to my friends and asked...so we`ll see....
Edit:// They both were so fast that I was still writing this while their answers came. Thank`s Esa & Tuomo. And both said that this is subspecie cabaret.
