The Moldovan State Circus building is one of Chișinău’s architectural highlights. It was built in 1981 (architect S. M. Shoikhet) and was awarded the State Prize of the Moldavian SSR in 1984 . The building was closed in 2004.
The current status of the building is a bit difficult to ascertain. According to the Chișinău Circus website (www.circ-chisinau.md/) performances restarted in what is referred to as the 'Small Arena' in 2014 with performances happening as recently as April 2020, but when I visited in September 2019 the entire complex was looking very sorry for itself and it was difficult to find any evidence of recent activity.
But in its day the Chișinău Circus has an international reputation and seems to have attracted performers from all over the USSR and beyond.
