1.5 days in Costa Rica: Fiery-billed Aracari
April 6th, 2008. Upper mirador at El Manatial de Agua Viva Road near Tarcoles, adjacent to Carara National Park.
This was one of my target species - a regional endemic restricted to the Pacific-slope of southern Costa Rica and western Panama. Field-guide depictions and this picture do not do justice to the beauty of this bird. At one point I had it back-lit in silhouette, and the bill had an unbelievable translucent, fiery glow, unlike anything I have ever seen in the bird world!
