Kuruwhengi pair - Australasian shoveler - Anas rhynchotis

The kuruwhengi is a shy and wary duck rarely seen in busy public ponds and, even when present, does not join the introduced mallard to take bread from children.

This pair has, somewhat unusually, adopted a small pond in the popular Christchurch Botanic Gardens and have been there for some years but seem not to have attracted, or been joined by, others of their species.
