Cory McAbee, director of Stingray Sam & The American Astronaut

Q & A’s with Cory McAbee at Rockefeller. The first festival screening of Stingray Sam.

The Wild West meets outer space in this futuristic six-part sci-fi musical. Cory McAbee serves up quite a handful in Stingray Sam, but this is after all the man who gave us the cult classic The American Astronaut. McAbee stars as main character Stingray Sam, a lounge singer on planet Mars thrown into an intergalactic rescue mission. Stingray Sam and his former cellmate the Quasar Kid are risking life and limb to rescue a young girl who holds the key to genetic world domination, nonetheless. This is a playful and stylistic mash up of genres, which makes for excellent entertainment. Divided into six episodes, this epos is constructed to match every viewing format imaginable. Voice talent David Hyde Pierce is the omniscient narrator. McAbee’s band American Astronaut provides the soundtrack.

Cory McAbee (b. 1961) is an American writer, musician and director. He is perhaps most famous for his performance band The Billy Nayer Show, and his feature film debut The American Astronaut (2001). He has also made several short films.

In connection with Cory McAbees visit, we arrange a special screening of his sensational debut, which OIFF also screened in 2001. The American Astronaut is a retro futuristic space-spaghetti-western-musical topped with the director's own neo-surrealistic rockabilly cult band: The Billy Nayer Show. All in glorious black and white. The director will be present at the screening.
