Finding hope in Comuna 13 once considered the most dangerous neighborhood in Colombia.
When I was in Colombia I experienced the transformation of a neighborhood in Medellin that was once controlled by gangs loyal to Pablo Escobar. Comuna 13 was a neighborhood notorious for paramilitary, guerrilla and gang activity. Today, the neighborhood has transformed itself where I saw kids playing on the streets, vendors selling their goods with smiles on their faces and artists freely sharing their creativity. This was all possible through the free expression of Hip-hop music and street art graffiti.
While walking around Comuna 13 with fellow photographer Steve, we met Norma, a local vendor selling fruit juices. I asked her if she would pose for me in front of one of the murals and she was happy to do so!
