Wilson’s Bird of Paradise, Cicinnurus respublica, Endemic
This superb looking Bird of Paradise is only found on Waigeo and nearby islands off the west copast of West Papua. It is the size of a Eurasian Song Thrush so as little larger than Grey-cheeked or Swainson’s. The bald crown is a bright blue and really stands out in the shade of the forest floor. From first light it was busy clearing leaves from its lek. It would then display from a short stick giving great views. However, the light was so limited it made photography challenging. I feel really privileged to have seen this species.
