Well here's a mystery that I hope my flickr friends can clear up. This bird was giving loud rasping calls which I've always associated with male riflebirds but as you can see it looks like a female which I have always thought were more quiet and unobtrusive.
I googled high and low but couldn't find definitive gender info on the calls. So, I'm wondering if this is an immature male or an adult female? Anyone know anything? Looking at most descriptions of the call you would assume it refers to both genders as they don't specify....
It was having a good time lifting those mats of moss on the branches and grabbing whatever was hiding under them.
