belmont tunnel. los angeles, ca. 2000.

the abandoned toluca yard / belmont tunnel in downtown los angeles. for decades, this site was a mecca for the LA graf/mural scene, with stunning artwork rotating on a regular basis.

despite efforts of the LA arts community to save it, it is all gone. it is now buried under the foundations of a new condo development.

the belmont tunnel was LA's first subway, part of the pacific electric "red car" trolley system which was shut down in the 1950s. the red cars ran all over socal - one could ride the trolley from venice beach to san bernardino.
