Broad gauge branch line memory

South Australia used to have a number of broad gauge (5'3") branch lines serving the Murray Mallee region of the state, but sadly one by one they have been closed.

The line between Karoonda and the silos at Copeville was the last remnant of the line to Waikerie and I think when this photograph was taken it was in its last year of operation.

On 5 January 1990, Australian National ALCos 833/844 have just left Copeville with eleven hoppers of grain that will eventually make it to Port Adelaide for export.
