Middle-spotted Woodpecker

In southwestern Germany, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker is a common breeder of mature oak-woods and orchards with old trees. Unlike other Dendrocopos-woodpeckers they collect their food with their toungue from the surface of trees, not from the inside by pecking. That`s why they prefer trees with a large surface created by a rough bark.
